1855 Japy Louis XVI Marble Ormolu Clock Set, 3 Pieces
For inquiries about this item, please scroll to the bottom the page: “enquire about this item”.
An exceptional French Louis XVI-style marble and ormolu bronze clock garniture, created circa 1855–1860 and signed by the renowned maker Japy Frères et Cie. This richly detailed three-piece antique set includes a grand mantel clock and a matched pair of cassolettes, all decorated with marble, gilt bronze, sculptural putti, enamel work, and finely cast ornamental details.
The clock is crowned by an elegant marble coupe embellished with ormolu ribbons and floral garlands. Above it, two beautifully sculpted birds create a romantic focal point: one sits quietly while the other stands with wings raised.
On either side of the clock case are two charming putti. One is depicted writing, while the other studies a globe, adding a scholarly and poetic character to the composition. The lower front of the clock is finished with an elaborate gilt bronze panel showing playful putti scenes, including rowing, music-making, and children at play.
The hand-painted enamel dial features floral garlands and Arabic numerals. Its original French movement is stamped Japy Frères et Cie, Médaille d’Honneur 1855. The clock has recently been inspected and oiled by a professional clockmaker and is in working order. It features an 8-day movement and strikes on both the half hour and full hour.
The two matching marble cassolettes complete the garniture beautifully. Each is decorated with gilt bronze garlands, lower bronze panels, and flame-shaped ormolu finials, creating a balanced and impressive display for a mantel, console, or fireplace.
