19th Century Royal Worcester Victorian Parian Flower Girl Statue
A remarkable late 19th-century Royal Worcester Parian ware sculpture, dating to approximately 1862–1890, depicting an elegant young flower girl or allegorical representation of Spring. Attributed to renowned Royal Worcester modeler James Hadley, this substantial antique figure is an impressive example of Victorian English porcelain craftsmanship.
With an approximate height of 62 cm / 24.5 in, the sculpture has an unusually commanding scale while retaining the delicate modelling and refined details associated with Royal Worcester.
Finely Modelled Victorian Figure
The young woman is portrayed standing barefoot in a softly flowing classical-style dress. Her hair is beautifully arranged and decorated with an elaborate garland of sculpted flowers and foliage, with individual blossoms, leaves and curls carefully rendered.
A detailed woven flower basket hangs from modeled rope straps around her shoulders and is filled with sculpted roses and foliage. In one hand she delicately holds an individual flower, reinforcing the romantic botanical character of the composition.
The drapery of her dress, braided straps, floral decoration and basket weave all demonstrate the accomplished modelling found in high-quality Victorian porcelain sculpture.
Viewed from behind, further details become visible, including a finely textured wide-brimmed hat suspended behind the figure, additional flowing folds of fabric and the naturalistic support incorporated into the composition.
Parian Ware
The figure is made from unglazed biscuit porcelain, commonly known as Parian ware. Its smooth matte ivory-white surface was developed to imitate the appearance of finely carved white marble and became particularly fashionable for sculptural works during the Victorian period.
