"Chant de L'Alouette" by Hippolyte Moreau (1832-1927)

  • Artist: Hippolyte Moreau

  • Title: Chant de L'Alouette

  • Material: Bronze with light patina

  • Dimensions: Approximately 81 cm high x 30 cm wide (31.9 inches high x 11.8 inches wide)

Description:
This exquisite 19th-century bronze sculpture, titled Chant de L'Alouette, was crafted by the esteemed French sculptor Hippolyte Moreau. It captures a young French woman radiating charm as she imitates the song of a lark. She stands barefoot on a flowering stump, her left hand grasping a branch while her right hand rests near her face, adding an expressive, lifelike quality to her pose. Dressed in a traditional peasant costume with a hat and partially knitted bodice, she embodies the pastoral beauty of the time.

At her feet, a bird's nest with two chicks enhances the sculpture’s connection to nature and the theme of the lark’s song.

Base and Signatures:
The sculpture is mounted on a circular naturalistic base and a circular stepped plinth with a plaque inscribed CHANT DE L'ALOUETTE PAR HTE MOREAU MEDAILLE AU SALON. The underside bears the number 25932. The piece is signed twice, once on the signature block, inscribed Chant de l’Alouette par Hte Moreau, Médaillé au Salon, and again on the lower part of the sculpture, affirming its authenticity and Moreau’s celebrated status as a Salon medallist.

Historical Context:
Chant de L'Alouette epitomizes late 19th-century French artistry. Moreau, renowned for capturing delicate and charming scenes, instilled poetic realism into his works. This piece reflects the grace and simplicity of rural French life in bronze, offering a historical window into the artistic and cultural values of the era.

This sculpture is not only a masterful artwork by Moreau but a significant artifact of 19th-century France, highly sought after by collectors and admirers of fine art. It embodies both the elegance and heritage of the period.
