An impressive late 19th-century decorative statue depicting the legendary Don Juan, artisan crafted in a richly detailed Baroque / Historicist Revival style.
Dating to approximately 1880–1900, the sculpture portrays Don Juan as an elegant aristocratic cavalier. He is shown wearing a feathered hat, flowing cape, richly ornamented costume, stockings and decorative shoes, with a long sword completing the theatrical composition.
Fine sculptural detailing can be seen throughout the figure, particularly in the facial features, hair, folds of the clothing, costume ornamentation and accessories. The tall proportions and dramatic pose give the statue a strong architectural presence.
The sculpture is cast from spelter / zamak and finished with a warm bronze-tone patina designed to emphasize the relief and detailing. Please note that the sculpture is made from spelter / zamak with a bronze-colored finish and is not solid bronze.
The sword bears the inscription “DIEU & LE ROY,” meaning “God and the King,” while the decorative circular base is finished with a plaque inscribed “DON JUAN.”
Who Was Don Juan?
Don Juan is the legendary fictional Spanish nobleman and seducer who became one of the most recognizable characters in European literature, theatre and opera.
The character emerged in the early 17th century and is traditionally associated with El burlador de Sevilla (The Trickster of Seville), attributed to Tirso de Molina. The legend was later reinterpreted by major writers and composers including Molière, Mozart and Lord Byron.
