This is a unique, authentic antique French table or mantel clock. It was made around 1780. It has a white enamel dial, with Arabic numbers on it. It works and chimes perfectly, everything was checked and cleaned by professional clock makers. It still has its original authentic gilded bronze work (it was fire gilded in 24 carat gold) and it is a true eye-catcher. The clock has an 8-day movement, it strikes every half and full hour. It comes complete with its pendulum, re-winding key and bell. It comes with everything. The back door is missing.

This big clock is exceptionally beautiful in that it combines true creative artistry with conventional, classical figurine aesthetics. Its marble base, held up by gilded legs, was beautifully decorated with a fine decorative relief all around.  On top of that base there is another marble base that keeps the clock up. Again, it carries a beautifully finely decorated gilded bronze relief with the typical Louis XVI flowers, branches and leaf structures.

Then, next to the clock, is a tall lady figurine, accompanied by a small angel. The scenery is very lively and its aesthetic qualities are very telling of the quality of their makers: the way in which the strands of the hairs are shaped, the lively manner in which the putti comes flying into the scene and the expression on the faces: this is clearly a very skilled clock maker. Some small parts of this clock show minor signs of wear, however this is only due to its age and authenticity. The branches and leaves and the large ornament in the middle on top of the clock are all very typical for the Louis XVI period—this is a highly decorative piece that will be a beautiful eye-catcher in any room.

This clock is mentioned in the book French Bronze clocks on page 131. Please check the last two pictures.

“ Amor looses his weapons”

The mischievous deeds of Armour have led his victims to resort to strong countermeasures. Here, a young woman, who is standing to the right of the clock is stealing his weapons. Like a trophy she arranges them on the top of the clock: the torch is at the center, behind it the arrows, with rose garlands. The small Armor, floating on clouds cries bitterly and wipes tears from his eyes. The figures are of very high artistic quality, in accordance with the high quality clock movement. Louis XVI circa 1780 date, day of the week and astronomical hand. Fire gild bronze, white marble.

The measurements of this clock are about: 17.7 inch (45 cm) high x 11.8 inch (30 cm) wide. The hour work was stamped by well-known French clock maker J. Marti and it says medaille de bronze (bronze medal).

This clock will be a beautiful eye-catcher in any room or place that it is put in. It is a very fine quality piece of art.
