This is a unique, authentic antique French table or mantel clock. It was made around 1810. It has a white enamel dial, with roman numerals on it. It works and chimes perfectly, everything was checked and cleaned by professional clock makers. It still has its original authentic gilded bronze work (it was fire gilded in 24 carat gold) and it is a true eye-catcher. The clock has an 8-day rope mechanism and it it strikes every half and full hour. It comes complete with its pendulum, re-winding key and bell. It comes with everything.
This big clock is exceptionally beautiful in that it combines true creative artistry with conventional, neo-classical figurine aesthetics. Its base, held up by four legs, was beautifully decorated with a fine decorative relief. On top of that base, four animal paws (signifying strength and power) are keeping the clock and hour-work up.
Then, the hour work and dial itself were embedded in a very luxuriously covered typically empire bed, on top of which a female figurine with 4 puttis are playing. One is pulling on her arm on the left, another two are to be found on the right-hand side and another is hiding underneath the blankets on the far left. The scenery is very lively and its aesthetic qualities are very telling of the quality of their makers: the way in which the curls of the hairs are shaped, the lively manner in which the putti were put into the scene and the expression on the faces: this is clearly a very skilled clock maker. Some small parts of this clock like its dial show minor signs of wear, however this is only due to its age and authenticity. Nothing major and the clock is generally in a very good condition.
This clock is very beautiful to look at from all different sides and angles—everything was decorated equally as beautifully. The sides for example were also beautifully decorated, showing throw cushions and blankets folded as if they were real. Underneath these are flower vases accompanied with flower designs and birds.
This clock model is very well-known within Empire clocks, it was also featured in the book ‘Encyclopédie de la Pendule Française du Moyen Age au XXe siècle’ written by Pierre Kjellberg, on page number 390-391.
The measurements of this clock are about: 17.7 inch (45 cm) high x 17.3 inch (44 cm) wide x 7.9 inch (20 cm) deep. The dial of the hour-work was signed with ‘à Paris’ (which translates to ‘In Paris’). It weighs in about 20 kilograms (around 44 lbs), this is a heavy quality clock.
This clock will be a beautiful eye-catcher in any room or place that it is put in. It is a very fine quality piece of art.
