French Empire Ormolu Bronze Mantel Clock Signed
For inquiries about this item, please scroll to the bottom the page: “enquire about this item”.
An exceptional early 19th-century French Empire mantel clock, crafted in richly gilded ormolu bronze and signed P.F. Rouchouze, Bordeaux. Dating to circa 1800–1805, this refined timepiece combines neoclassical Empire design, romantic symbolism and fine French bronze craftsmanship.
The clock case is entirely finished in a warm ormolu gold tone. Any darker or black areas visible in the photographs are caused by shadows and lighting and do not represent differences in finish or damage.
The composition is richly decorated with characteristic French Empire ornamentation, including garlands, stars, heart motifs, sculptural details and decorative feet.
A particularly distinctive feature is the romantic wedding theme. The lower relief depicts a queen approving her daughter’s marriage, accompanied by the inscription “JE ME MARIE.” Above the clock case sits a sculpted jewelry box filled with symbolic wedding gifts and decorative objects, reinforcing the matrimonial subject of the design.
The clock features an enamel dial with Roman numerals and is fitted with an 8-day mechanical movement with traditional silk-thread suspension. It strikes on both the hour and half-hour.
The movement has been professionally cleaned, checked and oiled by a clockmaker and is in full working order. The original pendulum and key are included.
