This is a beautiful antique French Empire table/mantle clock pendulum. It was made from gilded bronze, in about 1810. It has a white enamel dial plate with roman numerals and works and chimes perfectly. Everything was checked and cleaned by professional clock makers. It still has its original authentic gilded bronze work, it has only been cleaned. It is 24 carat gold, fire gilded bronze and looks like a jewel. The clock works for 8 days on a row with a string suspension of the pendulum. It comes complete with the rewinding key, bell and the pendulum. It chimes every half and full hour.

Image and description of the clock is to be found in the book of Elke Niehüser - page 31 (the cover of this book is shown on the last photo). It is a true museum piece. The clock will be delivered with a copy of this page of the book.

This clock is uniquely beautiful in that it combines true creative artistry with conventional, classical, figurine aesthetics. It has a multi-layered base, decorated with typically French ornaments and relief figurines. On these bases is where the actual hour work and dial are, on top of which a beautifully decorated figurine of a person with a musical instrument is to be found, playing in what seems to be a site of nature.

The hair of the figurine as well as the magnificent details in the reliefs really show the creator’s mastery of their craft. It portrays a theme from Orpheus and Euridice. Orpheus sings to the god of the underworld trying to free his wife. This is a portrayal of ancient Greek mythology.  The large figure itself is Apollo holding a Lyre (the instrument).

The dial was signed by the clock maker Rabiat & Cie. Schüller.

The measurements are about:

  • 66 cm high - 26 inch high.

  • 45 cm wide - 18 inch wide.

  • 21 cm deep - 8 inch deep.
